Otago Pipers Club Solo Piping
Manawatu pipers enjoyed excellent results at the recent Otago Pipers Club solo piping competitions held over King’s Birthday weekend. The competitions also hosted the 2023 NZ solo piping championships
Martin McPhee had a memorable weekend, winning the NZ Open Championship hornpipe & jig against a very strong field. He is the latest in a line of Tu pipers to win a NZ solo piping championship and we are very proud of him. Martin also won the qualifying march, strathspey and reel event and gains entry to the prestigious former winners event.
Pipe sergeant Willie Rowe also kept up his strong form, placing 2nd in both the NZ Championship 2/4 march and strathspey & reel, and placing 4th in the hornpipe & jig.
Rupert Nielsen also played well, placing 3rd in the B grade 2/4 March and 3rd in the U21 strathspey and reel. Brett McKeown also continued his promising form on the solo board with a 4th place in the B grade 2/4 march.
Very well done to all competitors and prizewinners on a successful competition. Tu piper Marion Horsburgh was also one of the judges.
